Estimation of hemosiderosis in seabirds and fish exposed to petroleum.

چکیده
Many seabirds die each year after exposure to petroleum hydrocarbons (Piatt and Lensink 1990; Khan and Ryan 1991). Crude oil, following ingestion, induces hemolytic anemia which occurs 4 to 5 d later (Leighton et al. 1983). A recent study reported the presence of hemosiderin in the liver of common murres (Uria aalge) at intervals up to 42 d after oil-contamination (Khan and Ryan 1991). Hemosiderosis has also been reported in plaice, Pleuronectes platessa, following the Amoco Cadiz oil spill off the coast of France (Haensly et al. 1982) and after experimental exposure of Atlantic cod, _Gadus morhua, and longhorn sculpin, _Myoxocephalus octodecemspinosus, to petroleum (Khan and Kiceniuk 1984; Khan 1991).

Seabirds exposed to even a dime-sized amount of oil can die of hypothermia in cold-water regions, but despite repeated requests by Environment Canada, offshore oil operators are failing when it comes to self-monitoring of small oil spills, says new research. Chronic pollution from many small oil spills may have greater population-level impacts on seabirds than a single large spill, suggest rese...
متن کاملPathological alterations in response to water soluble fraction of Iranian crude oil in gill of yellow fin sea bream Acanthopagrus latus (Houttuyn, 1782)
Water soluble fraction (WSF) of crude oil can pollute water and cause histopathological alterations in fishes. Therefore, sea water pollution with crude oil could detrimentally impact the fish health. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of different concentrations of WSF on gills of yellow fin sea bream. The fish were exposed to 0% (control), 2%, 4%, 8% and 16% of WSF for a ...
متن کاملBiochemical changes in carbohydrate metabolism of the fish – Cyprinus carpio during sub-lethal exposure to biopesticide – Derisom.
The effect of biopesticide - Derisom on certain metabolites and enzymes of carbohydrate metabolism were evaluated in gill, liver, kidney and muscle of Cyprinus carpio during sub-lethal toxicity exposure of 21 days. A dose of 0.28 ppm was taken as the sub-lethal dose. The organs were taken from exposed and control fish at the end of 24 hrs, 7, 14 and 21 days and used for the estimation of total ...
متن کاملHair Mercury Levels in Six Iranian Sub-populations for Estimation of Methylmercury Exposure: A Mini-review
Background: Mercury is widespread and persistent in the environment. One organic form of mercury, Methylmercury (MeHg), can accumulate in the food chain in aquatic ecosystems and lead to high concentrations of MeHg in fish, which, when consumed by humans, can result in an increased risk of adverse effects. Currently, the Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA) has established...

The effect of different sublethal concentrations of diazinon at 1, 2 and 4 mg/L on some hematological and biochemical parameters of grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella) weighing 850±155g was studied after 1, 7, 15, 30 and 45 days post exposure to the toxicant as a bath for 12 hours at 18-22 C. In one day exposure fish to the toxicant, the values of neutrophiles exposed to 2 and 4mg/L wer...
